Frequently asked questions

Is it necessary to be an expert in order to reach the hut?
The Piz Boé is considered the easiest "3000” in the Dolomites. This means that everyone can have a chance to climb the normal route, including children and elderly. All the most difficult steps have been equipped in order to make your climb easy and minimize the risk of injuries.

For those who want to try the challenge of the “Ferrata Cesare Piazzetta” it is recommended, unless you already are an experienced mountaineer, to ask a mountain guide for support.

What clothing is needed?
Although "technical clothing” is not strictly necessary, you must still keep in mind some simple precautions. First, a solid pair of hiking shoes, preferably boots that give ankle support, is needed. Moreover, even in summer it might be necessary to bring at least a spare shirt, a windbreaker and warm garment, since during summer storms the mild summer temperatures drop rapidly.

Are there certain age limits within which it is not advisable to try the climb?
As mentioned, anyone can go up to the shelter, including children and elderly. However it must be mentioned that infants and elder people tend to be more easily susceptible to altitude sickness.

How to recognize Altitude Sickness?
The first symptom of altitude sickness is usually a headache. Other symptoms include insomnia, irritability, nausea, vomiting, anxiety and dizziness. In the case of slight nausea there is nothing to be concerned about. However if strong headache, combined with dizziness, nausea and vomiting arise is imperative to get off the high mountain as quickly as possible, as these are symptoms of a potentially dangerous medical condition.

How to behave during lightning storms?
In addition to the sudden change of temperature, the greater risk factor associated with summer storms in the mountains is lightning. At the first warnings of a storm, thus, avoid peaks and ridges and proceed immediately to the nearest shelter.

It is always advisable to move towards the valley. Avoid to refuge in the cable car stations, and do not try at all costs to "make the top". Beliefs stating that cell phones, watches or jewelry attract lightning are nothing more than urban legends. In the case you do not know what to do CALL HELP! All useful contacts are in the links section, whereby the hut itself is a rescue station.

Where can I find out about the weather?
Each cable car station, the tourist offices in the valley and all the local radio stations daily report to the latest weather bulletins. Furthermore, an accurate forecasting service is provided by the meteorological station of Arabba, whose internet address can be found in the links section of this site.

Are there special rules of conduct to be followed?
The etiquette in the mountains is simply dictated by respect and common sense. However, there are some noteworthy differences between mountain huts and valley restaurants. First, all that is in the refuge has been brought up on shoulder or by the costly intervention of en helicopter. Likewise waste must return to the valley.

Therefore we ask to all hikers the courtesy to personally bring personally their garbage back to valley. For the same reasons, a high altitude hut is not possibly able to offer the same comfort you can find in valley, since there is no water main or electricity network. So if you are reasonable in your expectations, we will always do our best to satisfy your needs. If you decide to consume your own food, please do not do so using the facilities of shelter; there are few available places and you would so be preventing other guest the possibility to have a meal.

Can the refuge supply drinking water?
The refuge, being located on a top, has no running water. For kitchen use we have to use rain and glacier water, which if not mineralized is not drinkable. The only solution is therefore to buy bottled water or drinking tea.

How to stay over for a night?
Everyone is welcome to stay a night and experience the thrill of seeing the sunrise at 3000 meters. The shelter has 22 beds divided into several partitions from three to eight beds. As in all the shelters, blankets are provided with but not so sheets. You are therefore asked to bring a sleeping bag of sheet-bag, which you can also buy or hire on site.

Since the water supply is very limited and there is hot running water, there is no possibility to shower. You might therefore wash yourself at the sink. Although the hut is not a luxury hotel, we will do our best to make your stay as pleasant as possible! Recall also that due to the limited number of beds booking is recommended!

To reach the refuge must be experts?
Piz Boé 3000 is considered the "easier" in the Dolomites. This means that everyone can have a chance to stand for the normal route, and also banbini elderly. This fact in all the most challenging was that we equipped to facilitate the rise and minimize the risk of accidents. For those who wants to venture back into the Ferrata Cesare Piazzetta is recommended, unless you already have a degree of experience, a mountain guide.
